Located on Cape Town’s doorstep and nestled amongst pretty valleys and rugged mountain ranges, where the pace is slowing and the wine is flowing. Relax in the picturesque village of Franschhoek, a firm favourite of ours and which many describe as the food and wine capital of the country. Or visit Stellenbosch, also well known for its wine farms, natural beauty and Cape Dutch architecture, but more of a town than a village.
Whether you walk the trails at Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve, browse through the charming selection of boutique shops, galleries and antique stores, or take a tour on the local wine tram (highly recommended) Franschhoek is sure to serve your every need. The village is positively beaming with stunning accommodation options, from cosy guest houses to upmarket boutique hotels.
Stellenbosch is a university town and although popular with students, you will find both young and old flocking to its tree-lined streets, everyone loving the relaxed but vibrant atmosphere the town offers. From the minute you arrive, you notice the cleanliness, the abundance of eateries and the many classy clothing stores and art galleries to peruse. It’s really convenient to Cape Town and its airport so a perfect base to enjoy the Winelands.
Route 62 is fast becoming one of South Africa’s most popular road routes. It stretches from Cape Town to Oudtshoorn and links towns such as Montagu, Robertson and Oudtshoorn. It’s advisable to take your time along this historic and quaint wine route, leaving enough time to discover some hidden treasures and enjoy some of the best wineries as you meander. Think immaculate vineyards, scenic valleys, rolling hills covered with indigenous flowers and semi-desert scrub land, a gateway to the Garden Route.
