Most of us already know that Botswana has some of the best wilderness and safari areas in Africa.
From the semi-arid Kalahari Desert to the multiple waterways of the Okavango and the forests and river banks surrounding the Chobe National Park, this landlocked country offers a diverse and magnificent unspoiled landscape and is undoubtedly the perfect destination for any wildlife enthusiast.
We love the high value – low occupancy ethos that the Botswana Tourism Industry follows, which makes for a magical honeymoon haven and ultimate safari adventure for the discerning traveller.
Botswana has an incredible bird heritage, hovering around 600 species in total, all of which can be enjoyed by avid bird watchers or absolute beginners. Just check the best time to travel if you are coming in the hope of seeing something special, as each season can provide a different birding experience.
Highest concentration of elephants
A sighting of an elephant in Northern Botswana is pretty much guaranteed! Nowhere in Africa, nor the world for that matter, has as high a population of elephants as in Botswana, with the biggest concentration being in the Chobe region. To see these enormous creatures in their natural habitat is an experience you won’t forget.
Safari Activities
Just as Botswana is diverse, so too are the activities one can expect during a visit. These will vary a little between reserves since they are dependent on the environment and foliage. Botswana is a 4X4 country and game drives in an open vehicle rarely disappoint. And can you imagine exploring the multiple waterways and river systems by boat? A pretty unique experience, and one which offers a different perspective on game viewing and the behaviour of wildlife. The African bush on foot can be a thrilling experience, but it doesn’t always have to feel daunting, a huge highlight for visitors to the Kalahari is walking with local Bushmen and learning about the traditional lifestyles associated with this mind-blowing country.
Central Kalahari
The Central Kalahari, and the land of the Bushmen. Interacting with the local natives is a must-do activity, learning about their culture and how they have survived in this environment for so many years. One of the Kalahari’s most appealing attributes is the isolation and silence it offers, especially in today’s modern world rat race. Game viewing is excellent, especially in the north of the reserve. However, due to the arid conditions, it’s not just as likely to see large groups of animals together, unless they are migrating or congregating around the waterholes and pans. The main predators are lion and cheetah, the Kalahari black-maned lion being a big attraction. Common sightings can include wildebeest, springbok, gemsbok, red hartebeest and hyena, and if you’re lucky enough you might spot a leopard or wild dog. The Kalahari night sky won’t disappoint, lit up by millions of stars you could literally gaze at for hours while soaking up the serenity of the African bush.
Chobe
A trip to the Chobe offers amazing game drives and river cruises in the most beautiful environment. The river banks are often teeming with herds of elephants, while buffalo, hippos, crocodiles and predators are aplenty. Now, imagine this together with the most exquisite sunsets and sunrises, stunning accommodations and views for miles – sounding almost too good to be true? It’s definitely up there with some of the best safari spots in Africa! Why not combine it with a visit to Victoria Falls which is only a 2-hour drive away and one of the seven natural wonders of the world?

Kanana
Kanana is a private concession located in Botswana's southwestern region of the Okavango Delta. The area is known for its diverse wildlife, including large herds of elephants, buffalo, and antelope, as well as predators such as lions, leopards, and wild dogs. The concession offers a range of safari activities, including game drives, bush walks, mokoro (dugout canoe) excursions, and fishing. It is also home to various bird species, making it a popular destination for birdwatching enthusiasts. Accommodation options in Kanana include tented camps and luxury lodges.
Okavango Delta
The Okavango Delta is a first-class safari destination and one of the world’s biggest inland deltas. Throughout the year the Delta sees constant changes due to the flood levels and with this comes a great diversity in wildlife distribution and variety of habitats, but the permanent water source assures us of amazing game viewing all year round, with predator sightings being highly likely. The Okavango is also home to some of Africa’s premier safari camps, all located in the most pristine wilderness areas, each one offering something different to the next depending on its proximity to the water. As well as the traditional 4X4 game drives, it’s possible at certain camps to explore the channels by motorboat or mokoro (dugout canoe), a unique and captivating experience like no other. A safari to this extraordinary oasis, with its massive concentration of wildlife and exclusive remote lodges, will be hard to beat!
Tau Pan
Tau, which means lion, takes its name from the black-maned Kalahari lions that the area is famous for. They even have their own pride who has taken up residence close to camp and who love to keep a watchful eye on the family tent! The lodge offers spectacular views from its slightly elevated position, resting on a low sand ridge. Game viewing is excellent which you can enjoy from the comfort of the enormous deck that overlooks a permanent and active waterhole. A stay at Tau Pan will offer a truly memorable experience.
Botswana Accommodation
It is truly amazing how spectacular yet simple safari lodges in the African bush are. The luxurious camps are nothing short of inspiring and will transport you to a place of tranquillity and relaxation. The sounds of modern-day technology are replaced with an odd rumble of elephants, the roar of a lion or grunts and groans from resident hippos, of which there are plenty. There isn’t any doubt that Botswana leads the way in first-class lodge accommodation, from the uniqueness of the tents (these “tents” are like nothing you have ever seen!) and the sheer attention to detail which will remain with you throughout your safari journey, this is luxury at its finest, this is Botswana.
Dinaka, meaning ‘horns’ is an exclusive private reserve which hugs the northern edge of the Central Kalahari. The tents overlook a permanent water hole, and for those that fancy the thrill of sleeping underneath the African sky, there is a sleep-out deck offering panoramic views.
